MORE THAN 150 SUPPORTERS IN THE RAIN FOR AARON T. MURPHY’S JOHNSON CITY COMMISSION CAMPAIGN LAUNCH
Community leaders, pastors and residents gather at the Langston Centre as Murphy unveils “Provide. Protect. Prepare.” Vision for Johnson City, TN
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — July 7, 2026 — Rain did not stop more than 150 people from filling Elm Street and Langston Centre's parking lot on Monday evening in support of Aaron T. Murphy’s campaign for Johnson City Commission.
Supporters gathered promptly at 6:30 p.m. for a campaign launch that brought together residents, business leaders, nonprofit leaders, pastors, friends and families from across the community. Despite the rain, attendees remained throughout the event as community leaders publicly spoke about Murphy’s nearly two decades of service to Johnson City. Speakers highlighted Murphy’s record of bringing people together, solving problems, delivering results and building partnerships across the business, nonprofit, faith and government sectors.
Murphy officially launched his campaign around the vision: “Building a Johnson City That Works for the People.” During his campaign address, Murphy outlined three priorities for his campaign: PROVIDE. PROTECT. PREPARE. Provide Leadership You Can Depend On. Protect the People Who Call Johnson City Home. Prepare Our City for Tomorrow. “Strong communities begin with trustworthy leadership,” Murphy said. “City government should be transparent, fiscally responsible, accessible and accountable to the people it serves.”
Murphy also addressed Johnson City’s continued growth and the need for responsible planning. “Growth is a sign of success, but success requires preparation,” Murphy said. “Johnson City must plan wisely so infrastructure, public safety and community services keep pace with growth.” Murphy emphasized the importance of keeping Johnson City affordable and accessible for its residents. “Johnson City should remain a place where teachers, nurses, first responders, young professionals, working families, veterans and seniors can build a life and not be forced to leave because they can no longer afford it,” Murphy said.
When answering why he is running, Murphy told the crowd that his motivation is rooted in service. “I am running because I love this city. I am running because I believe in the people of Johnson City,” Murphy said. “My main agenda is simple: to love God and to love the people of this city.”
He continued: “I believe we need to be reminded that the members of our City Commission are citizens and neighbors first. Before there is a title, there is a person. Before there is a position, there is a responsibility. Before there is an office, there is a community that must be served. I am not running to be above the people. I am running to serve the people.” For nearly two decades, Murphy has served the citizens of Johnson City through community, business, nonprofit, faith-based and civic leadership.
“I serve because I believe service is one of life’s highest callings,” Murphy said. “And I am answering the call to serve the city I love.” Murphy told supporters that his campaign would focus on measurable impact, results and collaboration. “Progress happens when we work together. I believe leadership should be measured by results, not promises,” Murphy said. “Many people can bring ideas to the table. But throughout my life, I have built a record of turning ideas into action. Now, I am ready to bring that experience, that commitment and that same spirit of service and hard work to the Johnson City Commission.”
The campaign launch concluded with local pastors gathering around Murphy and praying for him, his family and the campaign. Murphy closed his address with a call to the entire community: “Johnson City, I am ready to serve. I am ready to work. And I am ready to help build a city that works for the people. The best days of Johnson City are not behind us, they are ahead of us. Together, let’s build a future that the people of Johnson City are proud to call home and that our children will be glad to inherit.”
